Osteoporosis is a medical condition that although present in both men and women, it is especially prevalent within women. It is a condition that causes bones to become weak which leaves the bones in a state vulnerable to fractures or breaks. The effect of osteoporosis causes the bones to become less dense, therefore weakening it. There are many effects of osteoporosis and can pose a threat if not noticed. It is known as a kind of “silent disease” as osteoporosis can cause breaks and fractures before being noticed. The risk of osteoporosis is higher in women as the hormonal changes that occur during menopause have a direct impact on bone density.
Osteoporosis is more common in women because they have a lower bone density, directly leading to one of the causes of osteoporosis. In addition, women go through menopause, which decreases estrogen levels, a hormone that helps maintain bone density. Estrogen is the hormone that oversees the cells that create new bone tissue. As the estrogen levels decrease after menopause, the production of new bone tissue is reduced which can lead to a lower bone density. There are other risks to developing osteoporosis. One such risk includes age. As an individual ages, the bones start becoming more prone to fractures and breakage. Osteoporosis can develop over time, worsening the condition of the bones. Another risk can include insufficient vitamins and minerals. Consumption of calcium and vitamin D can aid in the development of stronger bones.
Osteoporosis can largely impact an individual’s life as the deterioration of the bone structure can lead to more injuries and more risks. Injuries such as fractures and breakage, if not controlled, can lead to disabilities and limitations in the ability to perform tasks. Fractures can occur in any bone, but the spine, hip, and wrist are the most common sites. The injuries may escalate, causing further complications to occur. Serious fractures will require hospitalization and rehabilitation.
Prevention of osteoporosis consists of a good diet and a balanced lifestyle. A balanced lifestyle consists of consistent exercise and a diet that includes plenty of calcium and vitamin D. If the osteoporosis has developed, forms of medication can help. Medications that slow down bone loss include bisphosphonates and calcitonin or any kind of medication that balances the after effects of the hormonal changes. There are also types of medicine that aid in the growth and repair of bone tissue.
Although osteoporosis may be more common in women, there are ways of prevention, such as being inclusive of vitamins and minerals, exercising frequently and having a balanced diet. Additionally, osteoporosis can develop as an individual ages, so it is always best to learn to catch the signs of osteoporosis to control it while it is still in its early stages. By identifying osteoporosis early, medications and treatments will be more effective in the prevention. By maintaining a balanced lifestyle, individuals will be able to reduce their risk of osteoporosis.
